Story

Some travellers come to a village, carrying nothing more than an empty cooking pot. Upon their arrival, the villagers are unwilling to share any of their food stores with the hungry travellers. So the travellers go to the neck of the stream and fill the pot with water, drop a large stone in it, and place it over a fire . One of the villagers becomes curious and asks what they are doing. The travellers answer that they are making "stone soup", which tastes wonderful, although it still needs a little bit of garnish to improve the flavor, which they are missing. The villager does not mind parting with just a little bit of carrot to help them out, so it gets added to the soup. Another villager walks by, inquiring about the pot, and the travellers again mention their stone soup which has not reached its full potential yet. The villager hands them a little bit of seasoning to help them out. More and more villagers walk by, each adding another ingredient. Finally, a delicious and nourishing pot of soup is enjoyed by all.

Why is a dress hanging from a crepe myrtle in the middle of Stanardsville? (And how did it find its way to San Franscisco?) ... “Pollen Count”

The Silo Installation in the Barn Gallery at Firnew Farm

Trish Crowe invited Jeanne Drevas, natural materials artist, and Robert Llewellyn, photographer of The Remarkable Trees of Virginia book, to create a site specific installation in the silo at Firnew Farm. It seemed like a natural collaboration: the bark artist and the tree lover in a space that held grains and seeds.

The installation is called: Pollen Count. It represents a pussy willow pollinating, a rite of spring. Jeanne Drevas conceived the sculpture that hangs from the top of the silo, 22 feet and weighs over 400 pounds. It is covered in loblolly pine needles, and covered in sedge grass dipped in corn gluten. Robert Llewellyn photographed local tree seeds and pods in large formats hung on copper piping that surrounds the sculpture. They include:

The silo installation is an experience. Jeanne’s works are a creative process that involve a community effort. 40 artists helped create Pollen Count before and as it was lifted into the silo. She encourages artists to explore with child-like wonder the use of naturally abundant materials. The work takes on a life of its own. It is all sensory. It is larger than life. It is aromatic and includes a sound track of sounds that vibrate through the walls of the silo. The sheer physicality of the sculpture complemented by the exquisite photographic images that embrace and surround it, inspires a sense of awe.

As in modernism, where art turned to industrialism, here the agrarian space; not a neutral container, is the historical construct. The organic and poetic nature of Pollen Count plays off the graphic and square format of the photographic images. It is male and female; yin and yang. It is my hope that you will look at a silo or a seed pod with new eyes.

   The Firnew Farm Artists’ Circle began in the fall of 2003. Following its muse, the land that surrounds them, the group had one foot clearly in its love of art and creative expression and its other foot firmly planted in the Blue Ridge Foothills Conservancy’s mission to conserve its rural character. For seven years the group of now 45 dedicated and talented artists meet on a weekly basis and show twice a year.
   In 2007 the Blue Ridge Foothills Conservancy hosted a solo exhibition of Tucker Hill’s monotypes with the Madison Historical Society, which was held at the Kemper Mansion. Tucker Hill was a printmaker who excelled at expressing his talents in the form of making monotypes of the Piedmont landscape.
   Tucker was exquisitely sensitive to the passing “phases of nature” and took inspiration from his daily long walks. His practice of recording the location, date and exact time, represented by each print, was part and parcel of this keen observation. No one ever saw an “anonymous” print by Tucker Hill. His prints are tied to a specific location at a specific time in the Piedmont landscape. It strikes one that in this practice, he was saying this place, this time shown in this print, is important. It is worthy of your attention. This is how the light appeared. The light is what gives this landscape its character. It’s as if Tucker was saying, “Look at this!” and “Celebrate its beauty with me.”
   He discovered places that were not traditional landmarks in guidebooks, and saw the natural beauty in the back roads and byways we all have traveled and loved. In Walter Nicklin’s book “Pieces of the Piedmont,” on page 99 a print by Tucker shows a stunning column of white cumulus clouds soaring over the Blue Ridge, identified as “Route 619, Greene County, August 5, 1988 (printed January 29, 1989). And we know that on that summer day, the view from 619 was absolutely beautiful.
   Tucker was a regular Thursday attendee of the Firnew Farm Artists’ Circle’s Review + Critique of New Works session. He shared his singular vision and palette while opening the infinite possibilities of expression of whom we are and who we might be. He pushed himself as he raised the bar of excellence for our own works.
   It is the honor of all the artists of the Firnew Farm Artists’ Circle to dedicate their spring show to Tucker Hill’s legacy and to continue to know this place and time.

The Firnew Farm Artists' Circle's Christmas show will open at Sweely Estate Winery, 6109 Wolftown-Hood Road, Madison, VA 22727, November 20th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. It will be a celebration of local arts that will include not only artists: Tucker Hill, Lou Messa, Chee Ricketts, Henry Wingate,Sharon Zarambo to name a few; but also, the music of The Possum Ridge String Band. The wines will be from Sweely's own vines and hors d'oeurves will feature other Route 230 foods from Wolf Creek Farm and Kites Ham.

The show will be open to the public until December 3, 2009.

The group of local artists meet weekly at The Studio at Firnew Farm in Madison County. Beginning in the fall of 2004, as a plein-air painting group ; it grew into a group of 45 artists who now both work together and review and critique each other's new works. The range of creativity seems to have no bounds, with painters, textile artists, photographers, poets and musicians inspiring one another to continually raise the bar of their personal expression.

The artists will work with local school children to create hand crafted ornaments to decorate a holiday tree int he Gallery of the Winery. 100% of the proceeds will benefit MESA, the Madison Emergency Services Association.
